Primary Suite Conversion

Scope: Primary Bathroom & Closet Conversion + Exterior Access Redesign

Location: Pasadena, California (Bungalow Heaven neighborhood)

Year: 2023

Designer: Casa Bonita Team in close collaboration with homeowner

Photographer: Lacey Wood Photography

This project transformed a former sleeping porch into a warm, functional primary suite rooted in Craftsman character. Preserving the 1920s architecture guided each decision, including relocating original casement and pocketing windows and designing custom mirrors that sit in front of existing openings to keep natural light central to the space. After the first wall color proved too cool, we revisited the Farrow and Ball palette to find a tone that complemented the historic detailing and created a calm, inviting feel. The new layout introduced a larger shower, a refined bench, and improved tile alignment to highlight the selected marble, paired with low iron glass to keep the stone’s colors crisp. Because the home is within the Bungalow Heaven historic district, careful preservation was essential, from reusing an existing exterior door to reinforcing aging framing with new ties and discreet shear walls. Shifting the exterior door improved access to the yard, and custom board formed concrete steps completed the transition, resulting in a suite that feels balanced, light filled, and true to its Craftsman roots.
